Paving the way for better proofing

Contract confidence comes from expertise, experience, and tools that won’t let you down. Slaughter and May have it in abundance.

  • Company:  Slaughter and May
  • Industry: legal services
  • HQ: London
  • Employees: 2,900
  • Definely solutions: Definely Draft, Definely Proof

Slaughter and May is one of the world’s most prestigious law firms with a reputation for excellence combined with a fresh, innovative approach to work. But the firm’s existing proofreading processes were slow and ineffective, taking up too much time and preventing lawyers from making progress. Implementing Definely Draft and Proof was an obvious choice for Slaughter and May. It’s accelerated proofing time and freed up the firm’s lawyers to focus on higher-value work.

“Definely’s USP is being able to click your definitions and clause references and see them in that right-hand panel. No one else was doing that, which made it quite an easy choice.”
Emma Walton, Senior Knowledge and Innovation Manager at Slaughter and May

The problem with proofing

Slaughter and May’s lawyers were spending too much time proofreading documents. The firm’s existing process was inefficient, slow, and frustrating. Legal teams were endlessly scrolling up and down documents to find the information they needed, or cross-referencing multiple versions of the same document. In some cases, they would open multiple large files at once, slowing down their computers and slowing progress.

Slaughter and May needed a solution to alleviate the burden so their people could focus less on long-winded proofing tasks and more on value-adding work.

Cutting out context switching

Slaughter and May decided to implement two key Definely solutions. First, Definely Draft, our one-click tool for drafting legal documents. Second, it was also the first firm to onboard Definely Proof, our AI-powered legal proofreading tool. This combination allows its lawyers to draft and review legal documents in one place, without context switching.

And it’s already had a huge impact for Slaughter and May’s lawyers. Associate Jack Higgins said: “Before Definely, I used to either have to scroll up and down in the same document, which was really clunky and laborious, or have multiple versions of the same document open. Now, with Definely, I can just work in one document and I have the confidence that I can just start at the top and work through it in a thorough, methodical, careful way.”

“It gives me greater confidence that the work I’m producing is not going to be littered with silly mistakes. Definely’s tools allow you to ensure that the document hangs together in the way that it should.”
